Talk Timing Planner
Words-to-minutes calculators tell you how long the whole script runs. This one splits your notes by slide, so you see which slides eat the clock and where you should be at each point in the talk.
Using it
- Find your own pace. The 130 default is a placeholder, not a fact about you. Time yourself reading one slide's notes aloud at talk speed, divide words by minutes, and type that in. Nervous speakers often run faster than they practiced, so leave slack.
- Notes are not the whole talk. If you ad-lib, take questions or run a demo, put those minutes into the pause box or shorten the limit.
- Words are counted by spaces. Numbers, acronyms and long words all count as one word, so a notes block full of figures will run slower than its count suggests.
- Private. The math runs in your browser. Your notes are not sent anywhere or stored.
The same idea in the app. FlipStage is a free iPhone app for presenting from one phone stood upright between you and one other person: your speaker notes and a timer on your half of the screen, the slide on theirs. You can set a time budget of 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes, and the timer turns red when you go over it. It does not split time per slide or calculate your pace. That is what this page is for.
FlipStage on the App Store.
App facts traced to the FlipStage repo: time budget presets and the over-budget state in lib/presentMode.ts (DURATION_PRESETS, paceStatus) and the red timer in components/PresentMode.tsx; per-slide speaker notes in lib/deck.ts. The arithmetic here is words divided by words per minute, plus the pause you enter.
