MoveWitness turns a rental move-in or move-out walkthrough into room-by-room photos and notes, kept together, and a single PDF report you can share if the deposit is ever disputed.
Please note. MoveWitness is a documentation tool, not a law firm, and nothing on this page or in the app is legal advice. Landlord-tenant and deposit rules vary a lot by state and city. For a contested deposit or a court filing, consult a qualified attorney or your local housing authority. The app's job is to make sure you have a clear, dated record to bring them.
Frequently asked questions
- Who is MoveWitness for?
- Both tenants and landlords documenting a rental's condition at move-in and move-out to prevent or resolve security-deposit disputes.
- Is this legal advice, or will it win my dispute?
- No, and it can't promise that. It produces an organized record of your walkthrough. Whether that record wins is up to your landlord, mediator, or court, and your local law. For anything you're relying on in a dispute, check with a qualified attorney or your local housing authority.
- Does MoveWitness prove when my photos were taken?
- No. MoveWitness does not prove when a photo was taken, and nothing in the app should be read as a certified date. It keeps each room's photos and notes together, locks the inspection when you finish, and produces a PDF report you can share. How any particular landlord or court weighs that record is a legal question for an attorney or your housing authority.
- How does the side-by-side comparison work?
- Label rooms at move-in; at move-out, shoot the same rooms and MoveWitness pairs them in the report so a reviewer sees before and after together.
- Where are my photos and notes stored?
- On your device. MoveWitness has no account and no studio server, so your photos, notes, and reports live only on your phone — we never see them and nothing is uploaded to us. They're included if your phone backs up to iCloud or Google, and they're gone if you delete the app, so export or save any PDF you want to keep.
- What if I lose my phone?
- Because storage is local, export your report as soon as an inspection is done. Deleting the app deletes the photos.
- Do both the tenant and landlord need the app?
- No. One person documents; the exported PDF can be shared with anyone.
- How do I share the report with my landlord?
- Once your walkthrough is done, use Export to generate the PDF, then the share sheet lets you email it, message it, or save it to Files or Drive — it's a normal PDF you fully control. We'd suggest saving a copy somewhere off the phone too, so you always have the dated original.
- Can I add signatures?
- Not yet. MoveWitness doesn't have a signature feature or a cover page. Every exported report carries a SHA-256 content digest instead — a fingerprint of the report's contents that changes if anything in it is altered. It's not a signature: it doesn't prove when the file was created.
- How many rooms or properties can I add?
- As many as you need. MoveWitness is free right now, with no room or property limit.
- Is there anything to buy, cancel, or refund?
- No. MoveWitness is free — no subscription, no in-app purchase, no paywall, and no advertising — so there is nothing to restore, cancel, or get a refund on. If that ever changes, this page will describe real cancellation, refund, and restore steps first.
- Something's broken. How do I report it?
- Email us and include: (1) device and OS version, (2) what you were doing (adding a room, taking a photo, exporting the PDF…), (3) what you expected vs. what happened, and (4) a screenshot. That usually points us right at it.
- Can I request a feature?
- Please do. Tell us what you'd want and why — real move-day feedback is exactly what we want. We can't promise timing, but every request gets read and logged.
