Vocabdrift puts a word and its definition on your Lock Screen, rotating on a schedule you set, with an in-app quiz to help it stick. It's free — no account, no subscription, nothing to buy.

We read every message and reply personally. For a bug, include your device and OS version, what you were doing, what you expected versus what happened, and a screenshot — that usually points us straight at it.

Please note. Definitions come from a curated set, and mistakes do slip through. If a word or definition looks wrong, tell us the exact word and what looks off — we'll verify it and fix it in an update.

Frequently asked questions

The widget isn't in the lock-screen picker.
This is a known iOS quirk with newly installed apps — restart your phone once and Vocabdrift will appear under Customize. It's not something you did wrong.
How do I add the widget?
Press and hold your lock screen, tap Customize, tap the row below the time, and pick Vocabdrift. The app's onboarding walks you through it with pictures.
How often does the word change?
Whatever you set in the app's Settings: every 4, 8, 12 or 24 hours. iOS refreshes lock-screen widgets on its own timing, so Vocabdrift loads a long run of upcoming words in advance — the widget plays them back without needing to fetch anything.
Why isn't the word updating exactly when I expect?
iOS controls when lock-screen widgets refresh and limits how often. Vocabdrift precomputes the schedule so it stays close, but the system has the final say on timing.
Does it need internet?
No. Your words are stored on your device and rotate offline. There's no account and no server call to see them.
Why did a word I already knew come back in the quiz?
The quiz weights words you've missed before, so they come up more often until you answer them right. Once you do, they stop getting the extra weight.
What's the quiz for?
Glancing at a word on the Lock Screen helps you recognize it; the active-recall quiz makes you retrieve it, which is what actually moves it into memory. It only draws from words the widget has actually shown you.
Can I focus on just certain words?
Yes — star any word on the Home screen to favorite it. Once you've starred at least 4, you can quiz yourself on just your favorites.
Is there a Pro version or anything to buy?
No. Vocabdrift is entirely free — no subscription, no in-app purchase, no ads, nothing to unlock.
A definition or word is wrong.
Thanks for catching it — we'd rather know. Definitions come from a curated set, and mistakes do slip through. Tell us the exact word and what looks off, and we'll verify it and fix it in an update.
Where's my progress stored?
All on your device. Vocabdrift has no account and no server, so your progress and starred words stay on your phone and never come to us. They're in your iCloud backup if that's enabled, and deleting the app clears them.
Does my progress sync across devices?
Not directly — because Vocabdrift keeps everything on-device with no account, progress lives on the phone you use rather than syncing between devices. The upside is total privacy; the tradeoff is no live cross-device sync. If your devices share an iCloud backup, a restore carries data over, but it won't sync live between them.
Something's broken. How do I report it?
Email us with: (1) device and OS version, (2) what you were doing (adding the widget, a quiz, browsing words…), (3) expected vs. actual, and (4) a screenshot.
