Terms of Use — Vocabdrift

Last updated: September 23, 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and Baker Ventures LLC ("we," "us"), a Utah limited liability company, covering your use of the Vocabdrift app and its Lock Screen widget (together, "the app"). By installing or using the app, you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use the app — deleting it ends the agreement, and there is no account to close.

How your data is handled is covered by the separate Privacy Policy. The short version is that there is nothing to handle: no account, no server, no analytics, and no network requests at all.

What Vocabdrift is — learning, not expertise

Vocabdrift is an English-vocabulary learning app. It rotates a word, its part of speech and a short definition on your Lock Screen, optionally sends you the same word as a local notification, and quizzes you on words the widget has already shown you. That is the entire product.

It is a general-education tool for your own learning, and nothing more. As a term of this agreement:

Content, and the licences it comes under

The word list is not ours alone, and the licences it comes under flow through to you. The app states this in full under Settings → Acknowledgements; these terms carry the same statement rather than a different one, so the two cannot drift apart:

WordNet. Most of Vocabdrift's definitions come from WordNet 3.0, created by Princeton University and used under Princeton's license, which requires this notice — including the disclaimer below — on every copy: this software and database is provided by Princeton University; permission to use, copy, modify and distribute it is granted royalty-free provided this copyright notice and the following statements appear on all copies. WordNet 3.0 Copyright 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved. This software and database is provided "as is" and Princeton University makes no representations or warranties, express or implied, including no warranty of merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose, and no warranty that use of the software, database or documentation will not infringe any third-party patent, copyright, trademark or other right. Princeton's name may not be used in advertising or publicity for this app.

Wiktionary. A smaller set of entries — mostly recent words WordNet's dataset predates, like "gaslight," "doomscroll," "deepfake," and "cosplay" — are adapted from Wiktionary, the free dictionary (en.wiktionary.org), used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0). Definitions adapted from Wiktionary contributors.

Not affiliated. Vocabdrift is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Princeton University, the WordNet project, the Wikimedia Foundation, or Wiktionary.

Two consequences that are yours to respect, not just ours:

Everything that is ours — the app, the widget, the design, the name Vocabdrift, the quiz, and the selection, editing and arrangement of the word list — stays ours.

Your licence to use the app

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use one copy of Vocabdrift on devices you own or control, for your own learning. That licence is all you get, and nothing here transfers ownership of the app to you.

Your data is yours

Everything the app remembers about you — your quiz score and streaks, your favourites, your review queue, your cadence and notification settings, and the rotation schedule the widget plays back — belongs to you and stays on your device. There is no account, no server of ours, and the app makes no network requests at all, so none of it ever reaches us.

Acceptable use

Use Vocabdrift for your own learning. Don't:

Cost and purchases

Vocabdrift is free. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase, no paywall, and no advertising. If that ever changes, it will change in a future version with its own terms shown to you before you buy anything — this version does not obligate you to pay for anything.

No warranty

The app is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, that any definition, pronunciation or example is correct or complete, or that the widget or any notification will appear at any particular time or at all.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Baker Ventures LLC will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any lost data, lost progress, exam or academic outcome, or any decision made on the basis of a definition shown in the app. Our total liability for any claim relating to the app will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us for it (which, for this version, is nothing) or US$50.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law — including liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. Some jurisdictions do not allow these exclusions, in which case they apply to you only as far as that jurisdiction permits, and you may have rights under your local consumer-protection law that these terms cannot take away.

Termination

You can end this agreement at any time by deleting the app; that also deletes your data from the device. We may stop offering, updating, or supporting Vocabdrift at any time, and may suspend or terminate your licence if you breach these terms. The sections on content licensing, your data, no warranty, limitation of liability, and governing law survive termination.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Where mandatory consumer-protection law of your place of residence applies, it applies in addition to this.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date above and describe what changed. Material changes will be surfaced in the app. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.
